BP8_Web2.0 Tool #3

Plum.com Accessed 20 August 2010

Plum.com is a great site to use for class. It is essentially a Facebook, except not as famous I guess you could say. I think this would be great to communicate with the class and share links and what not, without having to deal with all the complications of Facebook. I would not want to know my students' private lives, nor would I want them to know mine. There are no applications for this; it's just a simple tool to post comments and attachments. I'm really a fan of this because it can get students interacting with the links I can post, like current events. I can post current events, photos, political cartoons, etc., at any time and have students comment on them as an assignment or for extra credit. I feel like it would make the class more comfortable with each other as a bonding experience by posting how you feel. There would obviously need to be rules about that though! I envision this as being kind of like CNN breaking news, where the class can get updates at any time- it can even be linked to an iPhone. This also is great for multiple intelligences (which I LOVE!), as it would be ideal for students who are not comfortable with talking in class. Doing things out of the ordinary like this tool would get students thinking out of the box with history. If they see a new news story that gets them upset they can post about it and discuss it with their classmates- again getting rid of the anxiety of public, face-to-face debate!
